Why Age in Place?

Historically, after retiring, maybe travelling and seeing the grandkids grow up, people then moved into age care homes, away from their family. That was a typical scenario.

As we know, many changes have taken place since and our families are opting more toward staying at home, usually with modifications to suit their needs.

But with the pressure of current housing needs, there are more multigenerational households emerging across the country, and with that comes the pressures of shared living spaces, and loss of things like privacy.

What else has been happening is that the planning regulations have been made more accommodating toward the construction of secondary dwellings, i.e. granny flats. and this has married nicely with the need to provide more affordable housing.

This has provided an attractive, cost effective option for building separate living spaces without moving away from friends, family and services, contributing greatly to privacy and independence while knowing familiar help, should it be needed, is close by.

And as for the construction side, not only can secondary dwellings achieve faster turnaround times and lower cost startup compared to building a new home, key is that many essential support age-in-place features can be built-into the structure ready for immediate use once completed.

Some may find building an new living space more desirable especially if your not a fan of disruptive and mess-inducing retrofitting of an existing home, something that often tests peoples patience. Will you be aging in place?
